What One Can See by Alf Orpen

I walk or run along the beach near where I live pretty much everyday when I am home. I find it a delightful way to either begin or end the day. One particular morning, at dawn there happened to be an unusual number of seagulls flying towards me, one flock after another, and for no reason I began to count them, one two, three.

Then another flock, one two three four five six seven, then yet another one, two three, four five….as strange at it seems I did this for around ten minutes and counted the numbers of around thirty flocks, and to my surprise, every flock was flying in odd numbers; from a single seagull, up to thirteen. I found this to be amazing and pondered the question why? Surely this phenomenon has been witnessed before I thought. By the time, I had pretty much concluded that seagulls must indeed fly in odd numbers, I looked up and then suddenly…… there were four! I laughed to myself and reflected that had I left the beach just a little earlier it would have been with the distinct impression that seagulls do indeed fly in odd numbers.

People in general think like this, what we experience we sometimes conclude at least in our minds that a certain phenomenon is absolute. “Oh this always happens”, or “I just knew that this wouldn’t work for me”, and… “this is always the case when I…”. Some of us live our lives in this manner, with a kind of invisible webbed attachment to the past and when situations appear we conclude that “oh yes, this is how it goes”, giving our power away to others and events in our lives.
Einstein postulated; “God does not play dice”, in other words, everything is indeed determined and that there is no coincidence.

Although there may be limitations due to our current circumstances, that does not hold us to a specific outcome for all our lives. The past we cannot change, and the present is due to that past, but the future we create in the now! In the past we counted seagulls flying in odd numbers, and based on our current experiences we may still believe that seagulls fly in odd numbers. However by simply going on a little further, making new efforts with a new resolution we may be gifted with seeing the truth; that seagulls do not always fly in odd numbers and our lives can also reflect that reality.

So, the point of beginning with clarity, is simply a way of stating that if we begin with a clear outcome in mind and put sufficient energy and time into it, “it” will become a reality…
